What are ingrown hairs?
Ingrown hairs happen when a shaved hair curls back and grows into the skin instead of out of it. The result is a small, often painful bump that can redden, swell, or even get infected. Razor bumps are normally caused by ingrown hairs.
What causes ingrown hairs?
The blade, the cutting angle, or the preparation is usually to blame. Most importantly, a blade that drags or cuts unevenly leaves a sharp, angled tip on the hair shaft, and that tip is far more likely to turn inward. Skin type, hair texture, and shaving direction all play a role too. For example, people with naturally curly hair will experience more ingrown hairs.
Why do I always get ingrown hairs?
Probably your razor. Multi-blade cartridges are marketed on the old 80's idea of hysteresis (see the below clip from an old ad), where the first blade lifts the hair and the next cuts it below the skin line for a "closer" shave. Sounds good on paper. In practice, it means hairs retract beneath the surface before they regrow, and that is a fast track to ingrowns.
How do I prevent ingrown hairs?
A newer, sharper, and better mounted blade will achieve cleaner cuts. A single blade, cutting cleanly at skin level, is the most effective change you can make. Pair that with a fresh blade (a dull edge tears rather than cuts), shave with the grain, and keep skin hydrated. Less complexity, fewer problems.
