Single blade vs. Multi-blade Razors

Single blade vs. Multi-blade Razors

Some people will tell you that their multi-blade cartridge delivers a smoother shave, while others swear by single-blade shaving. They might actually both be right, but it depends how you define "smooth", and that distinction matters more than most people realise.

The multi-blade promise

Multi-blade cartridges deliver an immediate, ultra-smooth result. The 'hysteresis effect', whether real or not, cuts hair below the skin surface, and on day one that feels impressive. The catch arrives within 24 to 48 hours. As those subsurface hairs try to grow back out, they meet the skin barrier before breaking through. The result is bumps, redness, and low-level inflammation that builds with every shave.

The single-blade reality

A single blade cuts flush with the skin. On day one it might feel a fraction less "dolphin-smooth" than a five-blade cartridge, and that is worth being honest about. But because the hair never sinks below the skin line, there are no ingrowns, no bumps, and no compounding irritation across the week. The smoothness you get is quieter, but it lasts.

Single blade vs. Multi-blade Razors

If you want maximum smoothness right this second and your skin can handle the aftermath, multi-blade will deliver it. If you want consistently clear, bump-free skin that looks and feels good day after day, single-blade is the more honest answer. One optimises for the moment of shaving. The other optimises for the skin you are walking around in.

Solo: A smoother shave

A shave that leaves your skin irritated, bumpy, or inflamed two days later was not actually a smooth shave. It was a trade. You borrowed smoothness from your future skin and paid interest in ingrown hairs and redness.

That is not a philosophy we are interested in. Solo is built around a single blade that cuts cleanly at skin level, because we think a genuinely smooth shave is one your skin recovers from easily, stays clear after, and can handle again next week without complaint. Smoothness that looks after you, not just smoothness that impresses you in the bathroom mirror on a Tuesday morning.
